To be successful, newsletters and other types of e-mail blasts require an HTML template that is specifically coded for the major webmail services (Hotmail, Gmail, AOL mail, Yahoo mail, etc) and e-mail client software (Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc.). These popular mail formats parse code, and restrict code, in different ways. For example, Outlook will strip out background images (with the exception of an inline CSS background image placed in the body tag in some versions, or in some instances with the use of Microsofts' VML). The objectives of the e-mail template developer are to create a template that:

1. displays as consistently as possible across the major software e-mail environments
2. minimizes red-flags that typical SPAM filters use to redirect mail to junk folders, such as the ratio of image content to text content
3. is lightweight, reducing the load on the sending server as well as reducing download time for recipients
